Past Exhibition: Allowing: Kellie Day

“This show is my latest effort in my constant pursuit of letting go and allowing, in my work.

I allow myself to be comfortable with a complete mess most of the way through the painting process, to allow the most expression and passion and feeling I can – and pull the whole mess together only in the very end with a few details.

With the zebra, I painted only stripes first, on top of an old painting, so the underpainting shows through. Then I surrounded the stripes with big brush strokes different reds and fluorescent pink to create the zebra shape.

I am constantly starting paintings with different methods, in order to trick my brain out of habits and patterns, and to allow new life and energy to come onto the canvas.

. . .

I am in constant state of learning and experimenting with my art, and this is the most exciting part of being a painter. I have learned in my years of painting that there is no destination, there is no “arrival” at being an artist. There is only a journey you have with your inner being, trying to open to the outer energy around you and let it in.

There are incredible miracles to be had in beauty when this opening happens. When you paint only from technique and your head, you only paint from what is inside of YOU, and that is limiting.

But when you let the world of energy outside of your physical being come through, you open yourself to infinite creativity, in all areas of life.

This is the practice / dance / journey / experiment I have with art – an allowing of greater energy to come through.

It is an allowing of things to happen on canvas that are out of control, and allowing the painting to have a life of its own, and being OK with not knowing what will happen next.

And most of all, being ok with creating shit, and creating beauty, all at once and seeing where it go. There is a very fine line between the two."
